If you didn’t watch the royal wedding at the weekend or at least see the follow-up highlights, then where on earth have you been?
Watching Prince Harry and American actress Meghan Markle tie the knot this last Saturday 19th May gave me ALL of the feels.
Even though there were people out there in the world who didn’t really get into the spirit of the occasion, I think most of us who DID witness the royal wedding can agree that it was something truly special to behold.
I must admit, I didn’t really participate in the obsessive nature of the build up, but I’m really glad that I tuned in on the day. I mean, you’d have to be a bit of a misery guts to NOT enjoy the spectacle – right?
Sure, it was all the fine details that came together to truly make it what it was. However, as fashionistas, there’s only one thing that we tend to be interested in.
That’s right – it’s the fashion.
The Royal Wedding: A Stylish Affair
From the gorgeous attire of some of the female guests to the bride’s standout wedding dress, there are a few style tips that we can all take from the royal wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.
1. A simple dress oozes sophistication…
…Especially if you’re just about to become a princess.
I mean, could Meghan Markle have looked any more chic as a future royal?
A lot of people expected her to go down the traditional celebrity-style wedding dress route. And by this, I mean that people expected tons of glitz and glamour reminiscent of something that the Kardashians might wear.
However, Meghan chose to completely surprise those people and instead opt for a Givenchy gown that was just as simplistic as it was elegant. The bateau neckline was the key point of focus, and then she let her diamond jewellery and THAT tiara stand out and do the talking.
Meghan, girl – you completely nailed it. You looked every inch the princess.
2. Sunshine yellow is always a yes.
Okay, can we just talk about Amal Clooney for a second?
I mean, how AMAZING did she look? My eyes nearly popped out of my head when I saw her stunning yellow Stella McCartney frock complete with matching hat.
Her and her husband George Clooney are serious couple goals. <3
3. Florals look fabulous at a spring wedding.
We knew this already, but some of the celebrity guests confirmed that florals rule at spring wedding, whether it’s a royal one or not.
For instance, did you see actress Carey Mulligan? She looked summery yet stylish in a yellow and pink Erdem number. Similarly, Pippa Middleton stood out by a mile in her mint green and taupe floral frock from The Fold.
YAAASSSS, ladies – just YAAASSSS! You proved that floral prints are always fabulous.
4. Sometimes less is more…
…In the beauty sense. I mean, who says that you have to be caked in makeup on your wedding day?
In this current age of contouring and piling on high definition makeup to try and look like a doll, it was so refreshing that Meghan chose to wear a subtle and understated face on her big day.
She’s naturally gorgeous anyway and doesn’t necessarily need makeup, but I have the utmost respect for her decision to embrace her authentic beauty and hardly wear anything.
Sure, she’d gone glam with her eyes (false eyelashes, I SEE YOU) but her actual face was rather stripped back. In fact, it was so stripped back, you could see every one of her freckles on the TV screen.
What a fantastic, positive message to deliver to the young girls of the world, who were all inevitably going to tune into the royal wedding of the decade.
Meghan, I applaud you – again!
5. The best fashion accessory that you can wear is a smile.
Victoria Beckham, I’m looking at you.
Girl, I know you’ve got the whole moody look down and you don’t generally like to smile for photos… But can you not at least try for a grand occasion such as this one?
I mean, I like Victoria Beckham, her fashion sense and all that she’s doing in the clothing industry – but she infuriated me at the royal wedding.
It’s probably an insecurity thing, but a wedding (especially a royal wedding) is such a happy occasion. She knew that all those eyes would be on her walking in, she knew how much the event meant to people and yet she still couldn’t crack a smile.
Publicity stunt? Maybe. But, in my opinion, she made what could have been an extremely pleasant outfit into something drab. And it was all because she didn’t wear it with a smile.
Take note, sasspots!
A Royal Wedding to Remember
Whether you tuned into the royal wedding or not, you can’t deny the loveliness of some of the fashion.
And it wasn’t just the women who were rocking it; the men also looked rather dapper!
Even though I loved seeing what everybody was wearing, the style of the attendees wasn’t really the be-all and end-all of the day.
Rather, the most important part of it was watching two people, who were clearly so very much in love, become husband and wife and vow to spend the rest of their lives together.
Just like the American preacher said, all you need is love in this life. Love has the power to do extraordinary things, it never fails and we could always use more love in our lives.
So, let’s all try to love each other a little more – shall we?
Bring on the next royal wedding!
